Lanark is a small town in the central belt of Scotland. The name is believed to come from the Cumbric Lanerc meaning "clear space, glade". Lanark is traditionally the county town of Lanarkshire, though there are several larger towns in the county. It became a Royal Burgh under King David 1 and continues to thrive to this day. William Wallace was known to frequent the area and it was here where he defied the local sheriff. Nearby is the world heritage site of New Lanark.
