Dalkeith is a town in Midlothian, Scotland, on the River Esk. It was granted a burgh of barony in 1401 and a burgh of regality in 1540. The settlement of Dalkeith grew southwestwards from its 12th-century castle. Located just south of Edinburgh it is steeped in history and by 1853 hosted the Corn Exchange – the largest indoor grain market in Scotland. The British Prime Minister, William Gladstone, began his famous ‘Midlothian Campaign’ from Dalkeith in 1879. Located in Dalkeith Park is Dalkeith Palace – former home of the Dukes of Buccleuch. Dalkeith is also home to Dalkeith Thistle Football Club.
